This section offers services free of charge to blind or sight-handicapped people.

OPENING HOURS:

Tuesdays: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Wednesdays: 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (for organised events only)
Thursdays: 12:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

As a barrier-free entry from the courtyard there is an elevator equipped with audio signals. The department is situated on the 2nd floor.

This section offers services free of charge to blind or visually impaired people.

They have free access to the audio documents collection. The library attendant can help with selecting a document.
This section was opened in 1991 in the presence of Lady Diana, the Princess of Wales.

Identity card and medical certificate (sight-handicap) is required to get a membership card.

The library fund includes:

  • audio books on tapes and CDs for children and adults (fiction, stories, travelogues, recorded plays, entertainment, religion, technical and educational literature, foreign languages courses)
  • DAISY books – special kind of CD ROM
  • audio magazines
  • magazines in Braille writing
  • magazines with enlarged print
  • magazines, bibliography and other specialized publications about sight-handicapped people life and problems

The collection of audio books contains about 5.000 recordings in Slovak, Czech or Hungarian language. The collection consists of about 1.000 titles on CDs and 4.900 titles of audio books on tapes (it represents 40 000 tapes, some books are both on CD and tape). It is the Matej Hrebenda´s Slovak Library in Levoča who provides the ONS with Slovak and Hungarian recordings, within the cooperation between libraries focus on free loans. Other material is obtained from the audio products market and K.E. Mecan´s Libraries and Press for Blind People in Prague.

The department ONS organizes:

  • at the occasion of the Day of Blind People, the ONS organizes "Open Door Day" which means a free access into the department: qualified guidance through all special services offered in the library, videos about blind people living and problems, exhibition of work made by sigh-handicapped people, guide-dog training, exhibition of special aids and information sources for handicapped people.
  • conferences, organized excursions on special information sources for sigh-handicapped users (for groups and individuals)
  • professional practice: theoretical and practical preparation for students focused on studying library and information services for special categories of users
